The Göbekli Tepe (Turkish for 'bellied hill', Kurdish Xirabreşk) is a prehistoric site 15 kilometers northeast of the southeastern Anatolian city of Şanlıurfa in Turkey.[1] It lies on the highest point of the long stretched mountain range of Germuş with 750 meters.[2] It is a hill (tell) that was created by repeated settlement, with a height of 15 meters and a diameter of around 300 meters.[3] It has been excavated since the mid-1990s as a long-term project of the German Archaeological Institute. So far, around 1.5% of the area has been uncovered during this work. A full excavation is not planned.
