Heathlands once existed here. Here, the Valkenswaard falconers caught the falcons they trained for falconry; this is how the area got its name.
Around 1900, falconry disappeared, and a new purpose was sought for the heathlands. Fishponds were dug near the Tongelreep. Here, carp, among other species, were bred. Fish farming attracted all sorts of (then undesirable) bird species that enjoyed a meal.
