13th century castle, now a luxury hotel. Also worth seeing is the park or the nearby Cong Wood.Built in 1228, the medieval Ashford Castle now houses an exclusive 5-star hotel. Its most famous guests include King George V, Queen Mary, John Lennon, Oscar Wilde, Ronald Reagan, Brad Pitt and many others. The hotel is also famous for its former owner Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness from the brewing family, who bought the castle in 1852. We have his son to thank for the large gardens and forests with exotic plants from all over the world. The castle has been in state hands since 1939.
