The first town hall building could have stood on the market as early as 1400. But there is no reliable information about this, just like about the successor building. Through silver mining and cloth making in the 15th and 16th centuries, the town of Oederan gained wealth, which was reflected in the new town hall.

Hieronymus Lotter, the builder of the Augustusburg, was also credited with building the local town hall. Architectural parts from the Renaissance period are still preserved today, such as the two entrance doors in the entrance hall and parts of the town hall bay window. As a central place in urban life, council meetings and court hearings took place in the large council chamber. There were prison rooms and the Ratskeller, where the city's beer was stored. It was a department store and dance store; here were the scales for the salt trade and various measurements for measuring the goods purchased. Fronveste and Brauhaus were added.

The town hall was the only building in the city besides the church that had a tower with a bell and a clock. As the population grew, the area of responsibility of the city administration and thus the number of employees increased. In 1913/1914 a major renovation was carried out to meet the new requirements. Almost 100 years later, the venerable town hall will once again undergo extensive reconstruction over the next three years.
