A stone's throw from Grau du Roi Port Camargue nestle the vast expanses of the Salins du Midi territory, in Aigues Mortes, whose existence dates back to the Middle Ages. With an area equivalent to the twenty arrondissements of Paris, the salt marshes occupy a large space between the sea and the ramparts of Aigues Mortes.
Made of multiple salt tables, which take on a pinkish color when the sodium chloride saturation is at its peak,
the salt marshes are a popular welcoming place for the fauna and flora of the Camargue, in particular the colonies of pink flamingos.
Fed with water from the Mediterranean Sea, they are the place of production of food and industrial salt and the famous Fleur de Sel de Camargue harvested manually.
The harvest begins in August and ends at the beginning of October. The production is stored in the form of large piles called camels which are visible from afar.
