The Nordkinn Peninsula is extremely sparsely populated. To the north is the fishing village of Mehamn, where the Hurtigruten ship docks twice a day. The road to Mehamn opened in 1989. Even in June, large parts of the higher elevations are still covered in snow and the lakes are covered with ice. The landscape is barren. There is hardly any vegetation, but Sami live with reindeer in the interior. There are several fishing villages on the coast. The peninsula is cut in the middle by two fjords, the ends of which are only a few hundred meters apart.
