The Church of San Nicola, of Norman origin (Xl century), is located in the historic center of Trentinara. It consists of a single nave ending in a raised presbytery with respect to the nave; on the apse wall there are niches for the storage of statues and icons that testify to the Byzantine influence in the culture of the Trentino village. The decadence of the church goes back to the century. XVII, when the bishop of Capaccio, Bonito (1677-1684), persecuted the Basilian monks, opposed their worship by burning sacred books and historical testimonies in the square of Cuccaro. According to a popular tradition, not validated by historical documents, but almost certainly reliable, the statue of San Nicola was stolen overnight by the faithful of Monte Cicerale who transported it to their church, where it is still venerated. Probably more than a theft it was a pitiful transfer wanted and facilitated by the inhabitants of Trentinara to shelter the Saint in a territory dominated by the Greek rite.
