Montmajour was built on a rocky hill surrounded by swamps, built by King Conrad III. the peacemaker of Burgundy (937-993) as a public cemetery. The chapter of the Church of St. Trophime in Arles sold the site to a noblewoman in 949.

Thanks to a donation from the nobles, Benedictine monks first built the Hermitage Saint-Pierre, a pre-Romanesque chapel half-carved into the rock. The construction of Saint-Pierre started in 1016. this was followed by the construction of an abbey church.

In 1030 the abbey received the right to grant indulgences. The relic of the True Cross of Christ was kept in the crypt of the abbey church. Because of the large number of pilgrims, Sainte-Croix was built as a reliquary chapel east of the enclosure in the 12th century. The pilgrimages "Pardon de Montmajour" took place on May 3rd, the day of the finding of the Cross. The abbey's income was also used to drain the surrounding swamps.

In the 11th century the abbey became the burial place of the Counts of Provence. At the end of the 13th century, the abbey's spiritual, political and economic influence extended to up to 56 priories from Grenoble (Isère Valley) to the Mediterranean Sea. During the Hundred Years' War, the abbey was fortified with a fortress wall and a defense tower.

The abbey is a mighty building, the tower offers a great view. The tour is well designed. We wanted to go through it quickly, but ended up spending 1.5 hours there.
