Lee Vining was founded in 1852 as a mining camp turned to town. The name comes from one of the founders Leroy Vining. It's a gateway town to Mono Lake, the Sierra Nevadas, and sometimes a resupply for Pacific Crest Trail hikers and other hikers. The local population has typically been under 500 people.
