The Heilig-Geist-Spital is one of the oldest facilities in the city. The hospital church is mentioned as early as 1300. The house had to fulfill universal tasks: it was not only a hospital, but also a home for the elderly, an orphanage and a poorhouse and, as the chronicler reports, there were in the old hospital, which was rebuilt in 1659, even some prisons, which used to be log houses or called gasping.

The importance of the hospital was also reflected in the salary of the hospital manager. He got 24 pounds of Heller while the mayor only got 20 pounds. Many farms and forests belonged to the hospital through donations and purchases. The food was obtained from our own farm. Impoverished Waldseer served in the Spitalsmeierei as servants and maids. The hospital was self-sufficient, it had its own mill, baker, butcher and blacksmith. The annals of 1617 record that Jakobus Lecher was dismissed as the town's schoolmaster because of his old age. From then on he was allowed to pick up a loaf of bread from the hospital every week to cover his living expenses (i.e. pension). When non-profit buildings were built, the hospital gave the helping citizens "food and drink" as payment.

The hospital also had to step in when the city administration ran out of money in times of need. The poor could always count on being fed with a spoonful of oatmeal in the hospital. The hospital had a stabilizing effect in many respects, only once did it run out of strength. That was in the time of need during the Thirty Years' War, when the farms were deserted by the plague. At that time, the hospital could not even procure the seeds for the summer fruit. The city then sold the silver dishes that belonged to the town hall in order to be able to help the hospital. At the same time, the hospital baker was convicted of embezzling loaves of bread. The neo-Gothic facade including the bell tower was not added to the hospital until 1856. In 1885 the facade was painted by H. Kolb and restored in 1978. In the hospital chapel, worshipers can still turn to two Holy Helpers from the 15th century: Saint Barbara and Saint Catherine.

Dating back to the 18th century, the Holy Spirit Hospital in Lübeck is one of the oldest social institutions in Europe. Wealthy Lübeck merchants and the city council built a hospice for the sick and needy, out of concern for their own spiritual well-being, but also out of concern for their own spiritual well-being.
