The Elmpter Schwalmbruch was placed under nature protection in 1964 and is mainly located in the municipality of Niederkrüchten.
In addition to its function as a European bird sanctuary, the heath landscape also offers an ideal habitat for smooth snakes and slowworms.

Here in the Elmpt Forest you will find a unique, large heath landscape. It is kept clear of flocks of sheep and from time to time the old heather bushes and birch trees are cleared, as brooms are no longer made from either. At the Elmpt town hall there is a bronze figure of the heath reaper who did the preparatory work for the broom makers.
