The word "Laveux" evokes the era during which quarrymen harvested iron ore on the northern slope of the Rouge-Eau valley. The ore was washed along the stream before being delivered to the furnaces of Montauban, Habay and Mellier. This activity ended around 1848, with the disappearance of the metallurgical industry in Lower Luxembourg.
Following this end of activity, the administration of the commune of Vance had a covered public wash house built at this location. The source, with its abundant flow and low limescale, was very popular with washerwomen until after the 14-18 war, despite the 2 km to travel. The water indeed had the reputation of whitening laundry impeccably. Following the construction of the washhouse known as "bottom of the village", the "Laveux" building was sold in 1951. A washhouse tank remains and the underground catchment area belongs to the commune of Saint-Léger. It is located south-east of Chantemelle, at a place called “Au Laveu”, on a stream formed by the overflow of springs and which flows into the Rouge-Eau 300 meters further. The remains seem to come from a small, very low construction, widely open, at least on one of its sides.
