This triumphal gate, sometimes called the "Triumphal Arch of Dijon", was built in the 18th century. However, its origins are much older, as at that time the city was surrounded by a rampart on which the monument was built. From these remains, the current city gate was rebuilt in the 18th century.
It was named Porte Guillaume after William of Volpiano, abbot of the Abbey of Saint Bénigne. In the 11th century, he contributed to the construction of the latter, which was later converted into a cathedral and is located nearby.
