From 1694, August the Strong ruled Saxony.
And wanted to have a pleasure palace built on the site of today's Rosental.
Leipzig's city fathers were able to cleverly prevent this. If you stand on the large meadow, you can still see six sight lines that were created for the palace that was never built. The later council gardener Rudolph Siebeck redesigned the Baroque park in the English style.
To this day, parts of the Rosental have been preserved as original floodplain forest with a large variety of animal and plant species. At the end of the Rosental, or at the end of Rosentalgasse, stands the 12-meter-high flagpole that still exists today.
This was built around 1892 and emphasized the entrance area of the Rosental.
