Beautiful little castle, in the middle of Haamstede.

Kasteel Haamstede, also known as Slot Haamstede, is a medieval castle in Burgh-Haamstede on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland. The oldest surviving structure, the keep, dates from the 13th century, although the history of the site goes back further, as archaeological traces from Roman times have been discovered here. Originally it was a wooden castle on a hill, later replaced by stone structures.

In 1525, the castle was badly damaged by fire, with only the keep remaining. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and renovated several times in the following centuries, most recently in the 1960s and 1970s. Since 1981, the castle has been owned by the Dutch nature conservation organization Natuurmonumenten, which maintains it together with the surrounding forest area. The castle is privately inhabited, but the surrounding forest and adjacent dunes are accessible as part of guided excursions.

The surroundings of Slot Haamstede, including the Zeepeduinen, offer scenic walking and cycling routes that allow you to experience the historical and natural beauty of the region. The castle itself is picturesquely situated near the Johannes de Doperkerk and is a popular destination for visitors interested in history and nature.
