Rauma is located on the Gulf of Botnia and is one of the oldest ports in Finland. The old town of Rauma (Vanha Rauma) is the largest contiguous wooden house complex in the Nordic countries with 600 houses on an area of 28 hectares. The houses, all of which have historical names, sometimes have richly decorated facades. The crooked floor plan goes back to the Middle Ages. While other areas of wooden houses in Finland mostly fell victim to fires, the old town of Rauma has been spared from fires since 1682 and is therefore exceptionally well preserved. In 1991 it was therefore included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
