De Hempont F20 Groen ferry operates day and night between Hempontplein (Amsterdam) and Zaandam. The ferry is in the same place where the Hembrug used to be. The Hembrug was only for rail traffic. The ferry now transports pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. The crossing time is approximately 7 minutes. The first ferry connection already existed in 1890 at the corner of Havenstraat and Hemkade. It was a wooden ferry that was pulled by hand across the North Sea Canal with the help of a steel cable. Initially, the ferry was mainly used by pedestrians, carts and carriages. Later the ferry was located at today's Ankerweg.

In 1925 a second ferry was put into operation. This brought little relief. With the construction of the new Provincialeweg in the early 1930s it was decided to build an entirely new ferry service using a much larger steam ferry. The new ferry connection was built on the east side of the Hembrug and connected to the Provincialeweg. After the new ferry was put into operation, the old ferry service was discontinued.
