The Mediterranean region is known for its pantheon of gods dating back to ancient, pre-Christian times. At least the corresponding names from Greek and Roman mythology have been preserved in the collective memory of humanity over the millennia to this day. Aphrodite, goddess of beauty and love, is very popular—especially in depictions by artists over the centuries, immortalized in paintings or as statues. Born of foam, she emerges from the sea. Her Roman counterpart, Venus, is found in local mythology.
