In 1873, the Salzkotten Franciscan sisters opened a nursery with a children's home and communicants' institution; since 1939, an infant home. A poor emergency church on the premises of the infant home was no longer sufficient as a place of worship. Therefore, between 1906 and 1908, the St. Mary's Church was built as a brick building in the Gothic style with a cruciform floor plan.

In the period between 1859 and 1871, the pastoral care of the Catholics Schönebecks by the clergy in Calbe (Saale). In 1872, a missionary vicar was sent first. Schönebeck's first Catholic priest since the Reformation became Vicar Carl Holst, who died during a typhoid epidemic. His grave site is now behind the Marienkirche. From 1877 to 1892 could not be filled because of the Kulturkampf the job, so that the Schönebecker community was again run as a branch of Calbe.
