The official name for the stacked stones in German-speaking countries is Steinmännchen. Other names are Steinmänn, Steinmandl, Steinmanderl or Steindauben. Many people also simply refer to it as a stone tower. In English they are called “cairns”.
Cairns grow by people repeatedly placing stones on top of each other. The figures take on a variety of shapes. Most have the shape of columns or are stacked like a tapering tower. Since some of them are repeatedly passed by hikers, they stop and add a stone.
