    Archaeological Park of the Tauriani

    Archaeological Park Tauriani

    The Archaeological Park of the Tauriani "Antonio De Salvo" is located in the area where the ancient city of Tauriana (or Taurianum) once stood, on an area of about three hectares, situated on a coastal plateau overlooking the splendid stretch of the Costa Viola on the southern Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. The park is named after the Palmese doctor Antonio De Salvo (Palmi, June 25, 1851 – January 20, 1924). It was he who, in the nineteenth century, had the first intuitions and the first discoveries of the archaeological presences of ancient Brettia and then of the Roman city of Tauriana. It was built with funds from APQ Beni culturali Calabria and with funds from the Provincial Council of Reggio Calabria and was inaugurated on September 17, 2011. Scientific investigations on the plateau began towards the end of the nineteenth century after the mapping of De Salvo in 1886. In the twentieth century, from 1995, important campaigns of excavations in the area began by the Superintendence of Archaeological Heritage of Calabria in collaboration with Italian and foreign universities.

    The structures found and highlighted in the park are the following:

    – huts from 4,000 years ago discovered a few meters deep;

    – urban plants of the city (first Brettia, then Roman);

    – the "House of Mosaic";

    – the "Municipal Sanctuary", better known as the "House of Donna Canfora";

    – a Roman road;

    – a building designed for circular shapes: already at the end of the nineteenth century, the historian De Salvo, in the work Metauria and Tauriana, had imagined it to be an amphitheater.

    – the Spanish Tower from 1500, already known and appreciated for some time.
