Ibrahim Rugova was a Kosovan politician, writer and President of Kosovo from March 4, 2002 until his death.

He is referred to by most Kosovars as the father of the nation, even as the "Gandhi of the Balkans". Der Spiegel also called him the "Gandhi of the Balkans".

Although Ibrahim Rugova was officially in favor of a non-violent solution to the Kosovo conflict, he did have contacts to leaders of the UÇK in the background, who paved the way for a violent uprising. After the Kosovo war, Ibrahim Rugova honored the KLA leader Adem Jashari, who was killed in 1998, as a national hero.

Rugova attached great importance to the protection of religious minorities. Pictures of his encounters with Pope John Paul II and of Mother Teresa, whom he revered as Albanian, hung in his presidency. Rugova also initiated the construction of the Mother Teresa Cathedral in Pristina.
