In 1868, Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, the later ruler of the kingdom, was here with guests on a chamois hunt and was endangered by a serious rockfall, but was saved.
In 1875, he had this mighty cross erected in memory of this, and since then it has been called the Prince's Cross.
