    Running

At the southern lakeside of Twin Lakes you can find a really nice trail for a run of around nine miles. If you fancy a dip in the lake, just plan a short stop at this position. In the middle between both lakes, where the southern and northern headland split the lake, you can find nice pebble beaches.

The Continental Divide Trail: Twin Lakes offers a difficult jogging experience across 8.8 miles (14.2 km) with 304 feet (93 metres) of elevation gain. You can expect to complete this route in about 1 hour and 56 minutes. As you jog, you'll be treated to expansive views of 14,000-foot peaks, including Mount Elbert, Colorado's highest. The route also features high alpine meadows and the sparkling glaciated waters of Twin Lakes. This segment provides a challenging yet rewarding journey through a stunning mountain landscape.

You should also be ready for challenging route finding, sudden hailstorms, and steep sections. Leadville and Twin Lakes are designated Gateway Communities, offering essential services and a welcoming environment for trail users.

Along the way, you might spot the historic 1885 Interlaken resort and Dexter House, adding a touch of history to your scenic run. Embark on a difficult jogging adventure along Segment 11 of the Colorado Trail: Collegiate East. This route spans 17.6 miles (28.3 km) and involves a significant climb of 2800 feet (853 metres), typically taking around 4 hours and 24 minutes to complete. As you jog, you will enjoy views of the Collegiate Peaks to your right and the Arkansas River Valley unfolding to your left, with the unique beauty around Twin Lakes and the Clear Creek Reservoir overlook providing memorable sights.

When planning your visit, you will find that parking is usually available at trailheads near Twin Lakes and Clear Creek Road. This segment is known for its easier resupply logistics and reduced exposure to thunderstorms compared to the western part of the Collegiate route. The trail generally stays below the treeline, offering a good warmup for potentially steeper hills you might encounter on the full Collegiate Loop.

The Collegiate East route stands out for its practical advantages, making it a favored choice for runners. It provides a less logistically challenging experience while still delivering the rugged beauty of the Colorado Trail. This segment can serve as an excellent introduction to the longer Collegiate Loop, allowing you to experience a portion of its character and prepare for more extensive journeys.
