On Saturday, June 6, 2020, a memorial service was held in Šardice to mark the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, during which a memorial to its victims was unveiled. The event was organized by the former mining associations of the South Moravian lignite district and the management of the municipality of Šardice. With the help of the authorities, they managed to locate and invite the survivors and their relatives.

Lignite mining in the Dukla mine began in the 1970s. In 1965, 557 miners worked here. On June 9, 1970, the mine was hit by a natural disaster and the flooded mine did not work for almost three years. In 1988, up to 822 workers from the nearby area were employed here. Four years later, the mine was closed. The reason was the age of the mine and the high sulfur content of the mined coal. The liquidation of the mine, which ended in December 1993, ended the 150-year tradition of coal mining in the Šardice region.
