The felt pond was created between 1483 and 1485 on an old tin soap site to supply the Schneeberg mines with impact water. The dam collapse on February 4, 1783 led to the devastation of large areas in the lower valleys and claimed 18 lives. The pond was then rebuilt as the largest water reservoir in the Schneeberg mining area.
