In some summers, buckwheat grows in the fields near the Plins villages of Weißag, Zwietow and Gosda. The knotweed plant is called Heedekorn here. Its fruits, which resemble beechnuts, are ground into flour and groats. They used to be staples, poor man's food. The buckwheat pancakes achieved a certain fame: they were as popular with locals as they were with day-trippers. This is how the Plinse brought their name to the Plins villages. The Plinse is still available in Gaumers Gasthof and in the "In den Bergen" inn, but usually only on Sundays and by reservation.
