This demanding road cycling route, the Silver Lake Preserve – Whiteface Mountain Toll House loop from Moose Pond Parking Area, offers a true test of endurance with its 53.0-mile (85.2 km) distance and a formidable 3711 feet (1131 metres) of elevation gain. You'll experience the relentless climb of Whiteface Mountain, where the scenery transitions from wooded slopes to alpine meadows, culminating in expansive panoramic views from the summit. The route then winds through the scenic and quieter Silver Lake Road, known for its picturesque river and mountain vistas, making for a diverse and challenging ride that takes approximately 4 hours and 6 minutes.
Planning your visit means preparing for a difficult ride, especially the sustained ascent of Whiteface Mountain. You'll start from the Moose Pond Parking Area, and it's important to note that a toll is required for cyclists on the Whiteface Mountain Veterans' Memorial Highway. Ensure you have appropriate gearing for the steep grades. The road surfaces are generally excellent, particularly on Whiteface, and clear days are best for enjoying the spectacular summit views.
This loop is a favorite among serious cyclists and those training for events like the Ironman Lake Placid, thanks to the legendary Whiteface Mountain climb, often compared to Europe's Alpe d'Huez. The Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway itself holds historical significance, dating back to the 1930s, and both it and Silver Lake Road showcase the stunning natural beauty of the Adirondack Park, from wild landscapes to pastoral farm scenes.
