It is the oldest church in Mittersill, originally built as a castle chapel by the Lords of Felben next to their residential tower (now the Felber Museum) in the Felben district. Nicholas, the patron saint of travelers. Today's church is late Gothic with a Romanesque core, baroque on the inside, with a beautiful ribbed vault. With works of art from the Gothic to the Rococo, it is considered one of the most harmonious and best-preserved church buildings in the Salzburg region. The statues of the "14 Holy Helpers" (1440-1490) in the main altar are particularly valuable in terms of art history. The paintings with an old view of the town of Felben are also interesting. The pencil scribbles on the front door are a special feature - they date back to 1733! The Felberkerk is now a particularly popular wedding church. A "Children's Church Guide", created by the altar boys, is available in the church. The Tauernradwanderweg runs right past the church. The church is always open for prayer and viewing.

The originally Romanesque church was rebuilt in the 15th century. The last external renovation brought new findings. On the north side of the nave, two small Romanesque round-arch windows and three smaller rectangular window hatches above them were discovered at a height of approx. 2.9 m. The Romanesque layered masonry indicates that it was built in the middle of the 13th century. In 1262, Gebhard von Felben († 1316) donated the St. Nicholas Church with hospital in Weitau near St. Johann in Tirol, where they probably owned a castle. It can therefore be assumed that the Felber Church next to the Felber Tower was also donated by the Felbers. Today it is one of the 17 St. Nicholas churches in the Archdiocese of Salzburg.

The Romanesque Felber Church originally had the current height, but not the length of the current church. A round apse is assumed to have existed in the east. The Gothic reconstruction of the church, which took place in the 15th century, has nothing to do with the Felbers, as they had already died out in 1415. St. Nicholas was already a branch church of Stuhlfelden at that time and, like the church in Stuhlfelden, belonged to the diocese of Chiemsee.
