Along the Patensteig there are always small and large boulders, in particular the creek valleys and gorges still have particularly large boulders. Today it is common knowledge that the stones were transported from Scandinavia to the Extertal during an »Ice Age«. The Patensteig leads through the ground moraine of the Saale glacial period (also known as the Saale glacial or colloquially »Saale Ice Age«). It lasted from about 230,000 to 165,000 years before our time. The Saale Ice Age, named after the Elbe tributary of the same name, was the middle and most powerful of the three great ice ages in Northern Europe and northern Eastern, Central and Western Europe. The glaciations caused by the Scandinavian inland ice sheet reached their greatest southern extent here.
