Founder of the Grötzingen painters' colony
Friedrich Kallmorgen was born on November 15, 1856 in Altona. His father of the same name was a regional architect who wanted his son to follow in his footsteps. He encouraged the boy's talent for drawing and initially placed him in the care of his uncle Theodor Kuchel, who worked in Altona as a portrait and landscape painter and, in addition to his nephew, also taught the later German Empress and Prussian Queen Auguste Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg and her sisters how to draw.
The next turning point came in 1916. After the death of his wife, he moved permanently to Heidelberg as a freelance artist. He painted there in the last years of his life. Kallmorgen died on June 2, 1924 during a stay in Grötzingen. He was laid to rest in the cemetery there.
