Location and history: The protected area is located on the Schurwaldhöhe between the Neckar valley and the Remstal. It almost completely encloses the community of Baltmannsweiler with its district of Hohengehren and the community of Lichtenwald with its district of Thomashardt. The protected area was established on September 30, 1982 with a size of 2090 hectares. By decrees of August 14, 1997 and December 20, 2000 areas were removed, so that it now has a size of 2047.6 hectares.
The LSG belongs to the natural area 107-Schurwald and Welzheimer Wald within the main natural unit 10-Schwäbisches Keuper-Lias-Land.
According to the protection area ordinance, the main protective purpose is the preservation of the typical virgin forest landscape as an open space and recreational area between the Filsstal and Remstal valleys on the edge of the Stuttgart conurbation.
