The Limehouse Basin was cut in 1820 as the terminus of the Regent's Canal, it was enlarged during the Victorian age and known as Regent's Dock. It was a busy port until the second world war, after which it fell into disrepair and was closed in 1969. The area was redeveloped for housing and leisure in the late 20th century and is now a popular place to live or visit.
