The archive houses documentation dating from the 12th century to the present. The oldest document is a privilege of Enrique I of Castile by which the town and castle of Cabezón de Pisuerga are donated to the Council of Valladolid, in recognition of the council's fidelity to the king in the face of clashes with the nobility.

The Municipal Historical Archives of Valladolid is located in the Church of San Augustin. The church is all that remains of a monastic complex that once stood here. The foundation is from 1407, the building from 1550-1627.
