Natural processes were at work on this coastline, however. Sediment was being shifted along the coast by the action of wind and waves, being deposited here and gradually moving the shoreline. Effectively, the castle was moving inland and within a few years, cannonballs fired from the castle could not reach the sea. Attempts were made to heighten the castle and to increase the range of the cannons but nature prevailed and the castle closed in 1637.
