Legend has it that in 595 a dove indicated to Queen Teodolinda the place where to build the basilica. The Cathedral stands in the same place but was built in two phases throughout the 14th century. The Gothic-style facade is decorated in black and white marble. Inside there are renowned frescoes among which the Tree of Life painted by Giuseppe Arcimboldo and Giuseppe Meda stands out. Another important find is the Iron Crown: made of gold and precious gems, this crown was used for centuries to crown local sovereigns including the kings of Italy.
