The Amtshof was built around 1550 by the Counts of Hoya from the remains of Steyerberg Castle and is picturesquely situated on the Jacobiinsel, surrounded by two arms of the Aue, which was once only accessible via a drawbridge.
Originally, the Amtshof was not only an administrative center, but also a farm with stables, which were impressive for the time, a grain barn, other outbuildings and a "fugengenus (prison) in the earth".
