This almost silted-up, bog-like lake is said to have formed at the beginning of the 19th century when the rock layer beneath the lake at the bottom of an abandoned Rätsandstein quarry became impermeable due to natural cementation—known as Ortsteinbildung (stone formation).
Located at the highest point of the Schönbuch, the Birkensee has been designated a natural monument due to its plant communities, which are rare in the Schönbuch.
