In 1911, when the main fire station moved to Neckarstadt (see komoot.de/highlight/107312), square U 3 became available for the construction of a bathing and swimming pool. The businessman and city councilor Bernhard Herschel had already donated half a million gold marks for the construction in 1905. The bath is named after him.

Due to the First World War, the Herschelbad was not opened until 1920. It was one of the largest indoor pools in Germany. The Art Nouveau façade was destroyed in World War II and was not restored to its original form.
