Merode is the best-known place in the history of the former Lordship of Merode, as its origin is inextricably linked to the history of the castle and the princes of Merode. The name derives from the clearing of the forest, on which the knight's seat was created and gave the name to the owners. Jean-Philippe-Eugène de Merode-Westerloo, Imperial Field Marshal (Habsburg), died 12 September 1732 in Merode.

From September 1944 to February 1945, Merode was in the frontline of the Battle of the Huertgen Forest. 90% of the buildings in the village were destroyed by bombing and artillery fire. Merode Castle was also badly damaged. From November 28 to December 11, 1944, heavy local fighting took place in Merode. On November 29th and 30th, 1944 alone, more than 300 died in Merode and its surroundings
