Castle Prison Tower / Torre del Castello, Lonigo
The first sources date back to 976, but it seems that the walls of Lonigo Castle were already built by the Romans (150-100 BC) who founded other colonies in Vicenza to cross the mountains guard and deal with the invasions of the Alemanni.
The castle, under the Counts of Vicenza, was located on a hill along the Novo river. With the Scaliger and Venetian domains, the sieges and destruction stopped, but already in the 500s the castle of Lonigo was almost in ruins because the city of Vicenza had suspended its maintenance. Only the approximately 33 meter high keep and the Scaliger tower, which became a prison, are still preserved today.
