The Niderhus was built in the 12th century as a counterpart to Stein Castle. Over the centuries it was rebuilt several times by different owners (Counts of Lenzburg, Counts of Kyburg, etc.) and has housed the Baden Museum since the beginning of the 20th century.

This castle used to guard the narrow part of the bridge over the Limmat. Until 1798 it was the residence of the Landvogt of the county of Baden, today it houses the Historical Museum of Baden and the archive of the city of Baden.
