    Hiking

A wild beauty, endlessly wide and long and almost unvisited in May and September (apart from Survern). Here the Ribeira da Carrapateira flows into the Atlantic - at high tide it forms a lagoon with shallow and warm water. At the northern end of the first section of the beach there are interesting rock formations and a cave-like passage and then the beach is far from over. Absolutely undeveloped, a miracle in this time of mass tourism. A small wooden hut defies the wind, a bar in high season.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How easy is it to find parking at Praia da Bordeira, especially during peak season?

Parking is available near Praia da Bordeira, but it can fill up very quickly, particularly during the summer months and on weekends. To secure a spot, it's highly recommended to arrive before mid-morning.

Is Praia da Bordeira a dog-friendly beach?

Yes, Praia da Bordeira is generally considered dog-friendly. The calm, shallow lagoon formed by the Ribeira da Carrapateira is a popular and safe spot for dogs to play. The vastness of the beach also provides ample space for walks, though it's always good practice to keep dogs under control and clean up after them.

What makes Praia da Bordeira a good choice for families, beyond the lagoon?

Beyond the safe and shallow lagoon, the sheer size of Praia da Bordeira offers plenty of space for children to play, build sandcastles, and explore without feeling crowded. The boardwalks above the beach are also suitable for family strolls, offering stunning views. However, be aware that the main ocean currents can be strong, so swimming in the lagoon is generally safer for younger children.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options directly at or very near Praia da Bordeira?

Directly at the beach, there is typically a seasonal beach bar that operates from May to October, offering refreshments. For more extensive options, the charming village of Carrapateira is just a short distance away (approximately 1.7 km northwest), where you'll find cafes, restaurants, and various accommodation choices.

What kind of wildlife can be spotted at Praia da Bordeira and its surrounding natural park?

The protected dune habitat and the Costa Vicentina Natural Park are rich in wildlife. You might spot various wading birds and raptors. Otters are occasionally seen in the stream's lagoon. The area also hosts diverse endemic plants adapted to the coastal environment.

What are the hiking conditions and terrain like on the trails around Praia da Bordeira?

The trails around Praia da Bordeira, including parts of the Rota Vicentina, offer varied terrain. You'll find well-maintained boardwalks above the beach, providing easy walks with panoramic views. Further along the coastal paths, the terrain can become more rugged, with limestone cliffs and sandy sections. Sturdy footwear is recommended for exploring these trails, which can reach elevations around 53 meters.

Is Praia da Bordeira accessible for visitors with mobility challenges or wheelchairs?

While the beach itself is a vast sandy expanse, the boardwalk and viewpoint above Praia da Bordeira offer accessible pathways for enjoying the spectacular views. However, direct access onto the sand and navigating the dunes or the rugged coastal trails might be challenging for those with mobility issues or in wheelchairs.

What are some unique natural features or landmarks to look out for at Praia da Bordeira?

Beyond the expansive golden sands and impressive dunes, a distinctive feature is the Ribeira da Carrapateira river, which often forms a calm, shallow lagoon ideal for families. At the northern end of the beach, hikers can discover interesting rock formations and even a cave-like passage. The rugged limestone cliffs and the offshore coral reef (for snorkelers) also add to its unique natural appeal.

How does Praia da Bordeira compare to nearby Praia do Amado for surfing and general atmosphere?

Both Praia da Bordeira and Praia do Amado are popular surfing spots on the Costa Vicentina. Praia da Bordeira is known for its vastness and wild, untouched feel, often feeling less crowded due to its sheer size. It has a distinctive lagoon that's great for beginners and families. Praia do Amado is also excellent for surfing, often having consistent waves, and is well-equipped with surf schools and facilities, sometimes making it feel a bit more developed and busier than Bordeira.

Is Praia da Bordeira suitable for a winter visit, and what can I expect during that time?

Praia da Bordeira can be a beautiful destination in winter, offering a truly wild and serene experience. While the seasonal beach bar will likely be closed and lifeguards absent, the beach remains stunning for long walks and photography. Expect cooler temperatures, potentially strong winds, and fewer visitors, providing a sense of solitude. It's an excellent time for hiking the coastal trails without the summer crowds.

What should I bring for a day trip to Praia da Bordeira?

Given its wild character and minimal facilities, it's advisable to bring essentials. Pack plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat. If you plan to hike, sturdy footwear is a must. For beach time, bring towels, swimwear (if you brave the cold ocean or enjoy the lagoon), and perhaps a windbreaker, as the beach is exposed to strong sea winds. A camera is also highly recommended for the stunning landscapes.
