The Elsbachsee, also known as the Pfingstsee, is a wonderful place with impressive nature. The lake is still "in the making" because it is a subsidence lake that can be traced back to coal mining. The lake can be discovered on the RevierRoute "Landpartie", for example.

Two decades ago, just for the holidays, a stream sank into a depression near BottropIt happened at a time about 20 years ago when a stream sank into the ground near Bottrop and the water burst its banks and it became a lake. And because it all happened at Christmas, they called it "Christmas Lake." A beautiful story? And even true.In the middle of the Kirchheller Heide, a piece of forest fell to its knees because of mining. Better: above it, the Chriemhilt seam. And he keeps falling. "This here," says district forester Werner Meemken and makes a wide swing with his arm, "will also disappear." He means the pine trees that are still waiting on the shore in a small but tall grove. Her sisters are already standing naked and without a crown up to the knotholes in the water, soon they will buckle and sink. It looks enchanted how the dark lake lies at their feet, with small ice floes on which the sun's rays glitter. The foresters saved other wood in time; there were more pines in the floodplain and alders too. But they knew what was going to happen, just as the mining industry knew: that a lake will grow in the forest has long been in the area development plan and also on a notice board on the bank.Source: waz.de

Special lake with trees growing in it, as if it were a mangrove forest. The gravel path over the dam in the middle is a wonderful way to figuratively immerse yourself in the lake.

a piece of pure nature. Almost, like a vacation
October 24, 2018
The nature reserve on Elsbach lies behind the Heidesee, but is significantly less frequented, as it is further away from the parking lot at the lake. Here you can watch herons and ducks and listen to a frog concert. There are two chairs and a tree trunk table at the bridge.
