Fort Herman Fortress
The upper fortress Fort Hermann, which is located on a rocky slope of the Rombon mountains, also belongs to the building complex of the Flitsch dam. It was built by the Austrians in the years 1897-1900. Compared to the lower fortress, it was more modern for that time. Their task was to control the Bovec basin and ensure artillery surveillance. First it was named Rombon plant and later Fort Hermann, after Johann Hermann von Hermannsdorf. He was the Austrian commander of the Predel Fortress, who died in 1809 with almost his entire garrison in battles with the French. According to the estimates of the builders at the time, the building should be strong enough to withstand the impact of the most powerful shells. Until the First World War, the fortress was modernized several times. A short connection of iron wedges was made between the two fortresses. The wedges are in bad shape today.
Right at the beginning of the fighting on the Isonzo front in May 1915, Italian artillery shelled the fortress and later completely destroyed it. Therefore, in May 1916, the Austro-Hungarian soldiers left Fort Hermann.

An old fortress, now a lost place. With a small underground fortification. Be careful, there are many holes in the ground and other potential injuries.I highly recommend visiting the two suspension bridges and the swimming area below Fort Kluže. The water is a beautiful blue. But be careful, just like in the fort!

Sturdy shoes are announced and a headlamp should not be missing either😊
Fort Hermann is significantly more interesting than Fortress Kluže. The effort to climb up is worth it.
