Trhanov is located in the south-east of the Upper Palatinate Forest (Český les) and is traversed by the Černý potok, which flows into the south of the village by the Bystřice. To the northeast rises the 585 m high Hrádek and to the southwest of the Čerchov (Schwarzkopf). Trhanov is located on the railway line between Domažlice and Tachov. There is a train station in Trhanov, and the Újezd-Pila train station is in the Pila district. In the west, Trhanov forms a closed settlement area with Chodov, both communities are separated only by the railway line.
Neighboring towns are Nový Hamr in the north, Újezd and Havlovice in the northeast, Pila and Babylon in the southeast, Pec in the southwest, Chodov in the west and Klenčí pod Čerchovem in the northwest.

The Trhanov Castle near Domažlice was built here by Wolf Wilém's son Wolf Maxmilián Lamingen (known as Lomikar) in 1676–1677. The original form of the chateau was modified in 1810 by the Stadion family in the Empire style. Among other things, the famous doctor Josef Thomayer was a famous local of this place.
