Part of the current Beek belonged to Germany until 1949. Here were estates such as the Wylerberg and famous taverns such as Startjeshof and the Grote and Kleine Musschenberg. The Kleine Musschenberg survived the Second World War. For centuries the border between the duchies of Gelre and Kleve (and later the Netherlands and Germany) lay in the middle of the present Keteldal and eastwards along the Rijksstraatweg. The hills in the east of Beek, including the Musschenberg and Wylerberg, therefore belonged to Germany. At the bottom of the Musschenberg there has been a farm inn since the 17th century. Its name is said to come from the local dialect for woodruff. There is an information board.
