The castle was built in 1690 by the Lippe court official Lewin Moritz von Donop as the owner after a previous Renaissance-style building was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. It was built in the style of Dutch classicism. The stairway to the castle was demolished in 1720 after a fatal fall; the ditches were filled up in 1870. From 1584 to 1958 the castle was owned by the von Donop family.

The building wing of the castle includes a castle garden and outbuildings. The facility is now privately owned.
