The Canal du Midi is an emblematic (and Pharaonic) work in the south of France, designed and built by Pierre-Paul Riquet, and which since 1681 has linked the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. It is one of the oldest functioning canals in Europe and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Agde, the Canal du Midi, built in the 17th century under the direction of Pierre-Paul Riquet, provides the link between the Garonne river network and the Mediterranean Sea. It joins the Hérault a little further on, before continuing towards the Étang de Thau via the Canal des Onglous. This waterway, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, bears witness to the ambitious project conceived in the 17th century to connect the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
