Old pome fruit varieties in the Zollernalb district
The orchard is made up of a diverse mosaic of different species and varieties. The wide variety of fruit varieties goes back to the work of the tree attendants who were employed by every community over 100 years ago.
In their own tree nurseries, they grew varieties that have proven successful in the districts concerned. This resulted in many local varieties that were particularly well adapted to the soil and climate. This variety of site-appropriate varieties is now a valuable commodity and serves as a gene reservoir.
